The 2011 Tony Awards

So, there's been no crazy Tony backlash like there was last year (probably because precious few FAMOUS people won awards-or were even nominated), so let's have a look at the ceremony.

1. The Opening Number

Generally hilarious; with Neil Patrick Harris proving that he's a pretty able host for the second year running. No sound issues/weird pairings this year, just a fun opening number showing off NPH, Catch Me If You Can's chorus girls, Sister Act's nuns, The Book of Mormon's...mormons, How to Succeed's businessmen and Anything Goes' sailors. Although Brooke Shields does manage to kind of epically mess it up.

2. The Number That Made Me Want to Finally Buy the CD

Andrew Rannells was pipped to the award by Norbert Leo Butz; but this was a brilliant, almost solo performance. Plus it made me giggle louds and I think I'll finally pick up the Book of Mormon CD, especially considering it won Best Musical

3. Biggest Why-the-Hell-was-He-Not-Nominated Moment

Okay, so I guess this is due to last year's stupid campaign, but even if it he wouldn't have won, Dan Radcliffe seriously deserved a nomination for learning to dance Rob Ashford's killer choreographer and showing that he is way more than Harry Potter-even if he is really short next to these guys.

4. Biggest Why-the-Hell-is-This-Show-Closed Moment

Especially considering this show was probably only nominated in recongition of the fact that it's the last Kander & Ebb collaboration. There is so much talent all over the stage in this performance, and Joshua Henry is stunning, he really deserves more than just ensemble roles in American Idiot

5. The Performance That Showed Just How Versatile an Actor is

This guy has played Roger in Rent, is the original Fiyero and is simply awesome as Jamie in The Last Five Years. I adore Norbert Leo Butz, and this performance-and his second Tony Award-proves just how awesome he really is.

6. The Performance That Everyone Loved & I Just Wasn't Fussed

Foster's talented but I don't get all the hoopla about her. Remember when everyone knocked Cry-Baby for just showing a dance number? When a show just does a dance number I generally start thinking that the rest of the show must be awful. IMHO Anything Goes is kind of outdated and really not in a need of a revival but everyone else loved it.

7. The Biggest What-are-You-Even-Doing-Here Moment

Spider-Man OPENS today. It's been previewing for ever-so it's not even eligiable for anything this year. This song is dull as dishwater as well, hoping that U2's songs are not going to get this bad either. I get nothing from Reeve Carney or Jennifer Daniamo. Just...meh.

8. The Closing Number

Another super-quick written number, this time by the awesome Lin-Manuel Miranda.

In general, the awards went where they were supposed to go. War Horse did insanely well, I really need to see that show in London. It was also great not to have any sound issues this year-the Beacon really does seem like a good place to host the awards.
